Work with Us not for Us
Krakatoa is Aberdeen’s only tiki dive bar, and grassroots music venue, which has recently undergone an ambitious £half million refit. The business is structured as a not-for-profit worker collective, with equality of ownership, responsibility, and decision making power… but no bosses.
We are continually seeking driven, enthusiastic and committed individuals to help us take things to the next level, with a view to them attaining membership of our worker collective.
It’s a Lifestyle Choice
This as a calling rather than a career move. Working here is suited to down shifters, dive bar aficionados, and those with a high tolerance for late nights and neon lighting. This isn’t so much a job as a way of life.
Desirable (but non-essential) attributes include:
- background in mixology (particularly tiki)
- knowledge of craft beer, real cider, and premium spirits
- familiarity with cellar management
- permissive egalitarian outlook
- experience of worker self-management
- personal liquor license and/or SIA front line license
Prospective candidates must be aged 18 or over. They are required to pay a small deposit on training materials, undergo a training shift, and complete an orientation period.
Black Cat pays above the living wage (regardless of age), but there is scope to earn more since members vote annually on remuneration. We also benefit from tips, a pension, and a t-shirt. The hours are very flexible, and there’s six weeks paid annual leave pro-rata. All necessary training is provided.
Talk is cheap. There are a million jobs, which cater for those content to mindlessly drift through the motions. This isn’t one of them. Click here to apply.
Anyone can Volunteer
Each of our members has undertaken to provide at least 40 hours of unpaid labour per annum towards improving the business. Outside of that they get paid for their time just like everyone else. Those who already have careers can attain membership without becoming employees of the bar, through this exact same mechanism.
We’re primarily seeking people with skills in areas that will help reduce our operating costs, specifically:
Accountancy, advertising, art, carpentry, cleaning, climbing, copy writing, dancing, design, comedy, commercial/licensing law, djing, electronics, engineering, fabrication, first aid, food prep, foreign languages, gig booking, IT, juggling, lighting, marine biology, marketing, musicianship, painting, palmistry, plumbing, promotion, proof reading, rapping, refrigeration, rollerskating, sales, security, sign language, sound engineering, stage magic, and welding.
If you possess any of these or other related skills, are prepared to donate your labour, and would like to participate with an equal say in the running of Krakatoa, then please get in touch.
