Work with Us not for Us
Krakatoa is Aberdeen’s only tiki dive bar, and grassroots music venue, which has recently undergone an ambitious £half million refit. The business is structured as a not-for-profit worker collective, with equality of ownership, responsibility, and decision making power… but no bosses.
We are continually seeking driven, enthusiastic and committed individuals to help us take things to the next level, with a view to them attaining membership of our worker collective.
It’s a Lifestyle Choice
This is a calling rather than a career move. Working here is suited to down shifters, dive bar aficionados, and those with a high tolerance for late nights and neon lighting. This isn’t so much a job as a way of life.
FT/PT/Relief Positions
Those of us already working here perform a wide range of activities centred around:
- admin
- bartending
- catering
- cleaning
- entertainment
- security
The more aspects you are prepared to get involved in, the more fun and rewarding this job will prove to be. Some of us switch roles throughout the course of a shift.
Qualifications
No experience is necessary, but having any of the following qualifications, experience, or attributes would be useful:
- personal license
- background in mixology
- SIA license
- permissive egalitarian outlook
- experience of worker self-management
- membership of IWW, SolFed, or AFed
Plus any other skills or talents, including (but not limited to):
accountancy, advertising, art, carpentry, cleaning, climbing, copy writing, dancing, design, comedy, commercial/licensing law, djing, electronics, engineering, fabrication, first aid, food prep, foreign languages, IT, juggling, lighting, marine biology, marketing, musicianship, palmistry, plumbing, proof reading, rapping, refrigeration, rollerskating, sales, sign language, sound engineering, stage magic, and welding… would also be viewed favourably.
Basic Terms
Pay ranges varies depending on experience, qualifications, duties, and shift pattern. There’s also access to a pension scheme, and a t-shirt… Hours are both flexible and negotiable. Weekly pay. Six weeks paid annual leave pro rata. All necessary training provided.
How to Apply
Applicants must be aged 18 or over, live in Aberdeen, speak English, and be skilled in reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Compose an email, explaining why you desire to work here, why you’d like to become a member of our cooperative, and what skills you can bring to us. The more engaging your pitch, the better your chances of being interviewed.
Talk is cheap. There are a million jobs, which cater for those content to mindlessly drift through life. This isn’t one of them.
Anyone can Volunteer
Each of our members has undertaken to provide at least 40 hours of unpaid labour per annum towards improving the business. Outside of that they get paid for their time just like everyone else. Those who already have careers can attain membership without becoming employees of the bar, through this exact same mechanism.
We’re primarily seeking people with skills in areas that will help reduce our operating costs, enabling us to invest more in our social mission.
If you are prepared to donate your labour, and would like to participate with an equal say in the running of Krakatoa, then please get in touch.
